From Volunteer to Connectivity Specialist: Abri Yusif Samana’s Journey with unconnected.org

When I joined unconnected.org as a volunteer, I had basic networking knowledge but no hands-on experience with installing and configuring connectivity solutions. I had no idea how the technology worked, and I wasn’t sure I had the skills for the role. However, since I was passionate about bridging the digital divide, I accepted the opportunity, even though my background was in software development rather than networking.

My journey started in Kakuma Refugee Camp, where unconnected.org was deploying internet access to schools and community learning centres. My initial role involved engaging local communities, coordinating with organisations supporting secondary schools, and explaining the importance of connectivity to students and residents.

But I was eager to learn more. I spent hours asking questions, watching tutorials, and researching how to install and configure connectivity solutions. A few days into the project, unconnected.org provided me with an orientation session, equipping me with the skills I needed. Before long, I was handling installations independently—setting up routers, optimising signal strength, and troubleshooting network issues. With each deployment, I gained confidence and expertise in networking.

Over the past year, I have grown into one of unconnected.org’s field technicians, helping set up connectivity in refugee camps and managing learning centres in multiple countries, including Malawi. I now train local communities, equipping them with the skills to install and maintain their own networks, ensuring long-term sustainability.

My expertise has made me a well-known figure in connectivity solutions. Today, when organisations or individuals in the camp need installation or technical advice, I am the go-to person. I now receive calls from different organisations seeking my skills to set up internet access and provide guidance on best practices.

From a volunteer with basic networking knowledge to a recognised connectivity specialist, my journey with unconnected.org has shown me that opportunity, curiosity, and dedication can create lasting impact—both for individuals and for entire communities.

Thank you, unconnected.org!
